The One Who Has Finally Revealed Themselves
The Ultimate Lineup: The Descent of Legendary Titles Beyond AAA
From June 6 to June 10, 2026.
The global gaming community was swept into an unprecedented state of joy and excitement.
A lineup of legendary masterpieces emerged—titles that transcend even the term "Triple-A," truly worthy of being called "once-in-a-lifetime" games.
-
FINAL FANTASY 7 REVELATION
FF7R
FF7R, serving as the grand culmination of the long-running remake project. -
DRAGON'S DOGMA 2 DARK ARISEN
DD2DA
DD2DA, the legitimate evolution of the supreme open-world action game. -
SWORD ART ONLINE ECHOES OF AINCRAD
SAO EoA
(The title was announced a bit ahead of time, and a playable demo has also been locked in.)
The big three giants of game development,
SQUARE ENIX, CAPCOM, and BANDAI NAMCO,
have lined up their Triple-A titles all at once.
The fact that these three giant stars revealed themselves one after another within a mere five days became a "Triple Impact" that will be deeply etched into gaming history.
A time of luxury and miraculous timing that every single player had been waiting for—yet at the same time, left everyone clutching their heads thinking,
"I can't believe they're all dropping at once"—has now raised its curtain.
The Pride of a Player
This is a group of once-in-a-lifetime titles.
They all showed up together. What on earth am I supposed to do now?
Buying all three will cost around $250.
If you calculate it purely by monetary value,
you'll be experiencing an extreme level of gaming through just these few packages—an experience that might even transcend the dense online experience that the renowned "FINAL FANTASY XIV (FF14)" has cultivated over many years.
FF7R is slated for release in the spring of 2027, so we can probably predict it'll be March or April.
Considering it's the third part of the trilogy, matching the numbers makes March 7, 2027, seem like a strong possibility.
Game release dates are typically on Thursdays, after all.
I wonder how it will turn out?
And this isn't just about FF7R.
It's not simply a matter of beautiful graphics or massive scale.
It's about showing our pride as gamers in response to the creators.
It's the "pride" of how we, the players, respond to titles that developers have sent out into the world by betting all of their technology and their very souls.
To all my fellow players out there: do you have your Buster Swords ready?
Are you mentally prepared?
Now is the time to show the passion and pride you've built up as a gamer over the years, and dive straight into the crest of this massive tidal wave.
The History and Current Landscape of the Transformed Game Show
The End of E3 and the Closing of an Era: The Legacy of a Quarter Century
Game shows—where players get thrilled by surprise announcements of new titles.
Gamers are always keeping their ears to the ground, waiting for the next wave of new releases at regular intervals.
What does the landscape of current-generation game shows look like today?

Summer Game Fest
Summer Game Fest is one of the world's largest game announcement events, held in North America around June every year.
Nowadays, you can be absolutely sure that the biggest news in gaming will be announced in June.
Speaking of game shows, it used to be "E3."
So when people hear "Summer Game Fest," there might actually be quite a few who aren't too familiar with the name yet.
Summer Game Fest was established in 2020 by game journalist Geoff Keighley,
following the downsizing and eventual conclusion of E3, which was once the world's largest gaming trade show held every June.
The event spans several days and is hosted through multiple live streams.
The biggest highlight of Summer Game Fest
is the "Main Show" broadcast on the very first day, which showcases major upcoming titles.
It has become the world's most highly anticipated stage for unveiling major future releases.
The announcements of this year's AAA titles, including FF7R, were unleashed right at the core of this Main Show, perfectly embodying the trend of this new era.
E3: Electronic Entertainment Expo
When people think of game shows, E3 might be the very first thing that comes to mind for many.
E3 had been beloved as the world's largest gaming trade show for a quarter of a century since 1995,
but having fulfilled its role as an event, its official conclusion (bringing the curtain down on its history) was announced in December 2023.
Reasons for the End of E3
- Massive Venue Scale
The gaming market has grown to the point where publishers can make their own independent announcements without needing to gather at massive exhibition venues like domes.
With the spread of the internet and advancements in digital technology, the gaming market itself became so gigantic and mature that each publisher could deliver information directly to fans around the world through their own streaming programs, without the need to gather in one place. - Exorbitant Expenses
E3 was an in-person, real-world event.
Consequently, it required massive physical costs, and the expenses eventually outweighed the benefits.
It was perhaps an inevitability of the times that the promotional impact (return on investment) no longer justified the physical exhibition costs, travel expenses, and labor costs. - The COVID-19 Pandemic
E3 was a live event where vast crowds of people gathered.
Coinciding with the wave of downsizing and cancellations hitting E3, society began to avoid large-scale events where people crowded into physical spaces.
To prevent pandemic infections, the mainstream format shifted toward online alternatives. - The Year 2020
The turning point came around 2020.
Major companies expressed concerns and dissatisfaction with the direction E3 was planning and withdrew their participation.
This eventually led to the cancellation of E3 events in the following years, heavily overlapping with the aforementioned pandemic circumstances. - Summer Game Fest
Next-generation events combining online and offline elements began to take place.
The true successor to E3 is precisely the Summer Game Fest.
And that is how Summer Game Fest became
the world's premier gaming event today.
The Game Awards
This is a gaming event held at the end of the year.
Rather than just focusing on new announcements, it functions as an awards ceremony to honor the games of that year.
If Summer Game Fest in June is an event that hypes up "the coming summer adventures and expectations for future releases,"
then "The Game Awards," held every December at the end of the year, is the celebratory ceremony that closes out the year.
That being said, The Game Awards is much more than just a standard award ceremony.
Since it is a stage watched by tens of millions of gamers worldwide, in recent years it has also served as a venue for massive new title reveals (World Premieres) that rival, or even surpass, those of Summer Game Fest.
We get showered with surprises in the early summer, and then we are shown further hope for the future at the end of the year.
Still, the original and most important purpose of The Game Awards is its role as a "game recognition event" to honor the outstanding titles released during that fiscal year.
Which title will walk away with the ultimate crown of "Game of the Year (GOTY)" is always the biggest point of interest for developers and players around the globe.
The three legendary titles announced this June 2026 are bound to take the gaming scene by storm,
and they absolutely harbor the potential to become the main stars of The Game Awards in the coming years.
Seeing these masterpieces—which developers spent long years crafting—get celebrated on this glamorous stage and etch their names into history
brings unparalleled joy to us as well, having lived through the exact same era alongside them as players.

Evolving Game Design and the Yearning for the "Sky"
The Game System of "Flying" That Expanded the Horizons of Open Worlds
In recent gaming styles—particularly within game systems and overall world design—there is an element that has undergone a remarkably massive transformation.
That is "the freedom to fly through the sky."
Traversing in older games was fundamentally a two-dimensional approach, much like humans walking on the ground; even if there were elevation changes, movement was basically restricted.
However, recent technological innovations have shattered those limits, releasing players into the vast open skies.
The catalyst that made huge waves in this movement and truly defined the trend is undoubtedly the rise of recent Chinese game developers, as seen with titles like "Tower of Fantasy."
The action they presented—seamlessly gliding and flying every which way through a high-density open world—gave a powerful jolt to global game design.
The sheer pleasure of being liberated from gravity, where the entire three-dimensional space becomes your arena for exploration, left such a profound impact on players that once you experience it, there is no going back.
The "Highwind": A Clear and Clear Cut Symbol
In FF7R, there is also a presence that clearly symbolizes this freedom of movement and the vast expansion of adventure.
It is the airship from FF7, the "Highwind."
In an interview article about FF7R, I came across a statement saying,
"The third installment will center around the Highwind,"
and I believe this exact design shift is precisely what they had in mind.
The exhilaration many players felt back in the original game when they finally obtained the Highwind and realized they could go anywhere in the world must still be deeply etched in their hearts today.
In the modern gaming scene, this "Highwind" has transcended being a mere vehicle for transportation and has been elevated into the very design philosophy of the world itself.
It will be incredibly fascinating to see how this approach to the "sky" is integrated into upcoming game titles yet to be announced.
Within this three-dimensional expansion of space, we are bound to re-experience the completely unrestricted travel we once dreamed of, in a form that is far more realistic and dynamic.

A Player's Completion and a "Story of Farewells"
The Reality Gained from Experiences as a Player: A Mature Trajectory
Even so, the lineup assembled this time is just incredibly profound—
a true culmination of the highest order.
If you genuinely intend to savor these massive titles to their absolute core,
spending the entire year of 2027 starting from July 2026 might not even be enough.
Faced with such a supreme lineup, depending on one's generation or age, some people might even feel,
"I may never encounter games better than these for the rest of my life," or
"I have absolutely no regrets left as a gamer; I could pass away at any moment without looking back."
This is where our reality lies.
A player who can experience these legendary AAA titles simultaneously in real-time is much like a "Master Knight" who has fully mastered every single weapon and magic spell.
Yet, at the same time, it marks the beginning of a blissful but brutal path—one that requires dedicating an terrifying amount of time and energy to gaming.
Parting Ways with the Online "Me": Between Infinite Service and Mortal Lifespans
In particular, the arrival of "FINAL FANTASY VII REVELATION" signifies the "completion" of this long remake journey.
And that somehow foreshadows a defining milestone for myself as a game player—a "completion" of my own.
I can feel a quiet approach to saying goodbye to the "me" who existed
within my favorite MMO (Massively Multiplayer Online) worlds,
where I have spent hundreds, if not thousands, of hours.
No matter how much time was spent there, parting ways with your alter ego in a virtual world is a lonely thing.
Truly, a deeply melancholy thing.
Online games, especially MMOs, have no end as long as the service continues.
There is even a hidden possibility that a service could outlive a single human lifespan.
However, our real-world time and physical stamina are finite.
Setting off on a journey into these three legendary standalone masterpieces means making a firm choice to step away from the online worlds that were once a core part of our daily routine.
Just as the history of Final Fantasy has always taught us, this too is a "story of farewells."
We hold deep gratitude for the memories of the past.
Now, we must take a step forward toward the curtain call of a new—and perhaps final—legend.
The End of the Disc Era
In July 2027, an important announcement was made by PlayStation.
- Discontinuation of Physical Discs
- End of Disc Production in January 2028
For all new game titles released for PlayStation consoles from January 2028 onward,
production of physical disc versions will be discontinued.
New games released after January 2028 will be available exclusively as digital downloads
through the PlayStation Store and retail outlets.
Titles already available on the market, as well as those released on disc before January 2028, will not be affected.
Looking back at PlayStation discs, the original PS utilized the "CD-ROM."
Today, PS5 game discs use "Ultra HD Blu-ray," capable of reading massive amounts of data.
The physical forms we hold in our hands—such as the package covers and the actual circular discs—will disappear.
Looking at the current state of the global environment, resources, and the changing times, it is a shift that certainly makes sense.
At the very least, game titles in disc format will continue to be released up until January 2028.
Defining an Era
FINAL FANTASY VII REVELATION – Releasing in 2027
This is the one, isn't it
On PlayStation,
FF7 was the title that raised the curtain on the era of disc-based gaming.
And as time flows on,
it is also FF7 that is about to bring down the curtain on disc-based gaming.
